10-Year-Old Indian Guitarist Maya Neelakantan Rocks AGT
Musical acclaim for Maya Neelakantan is no surprise. Her parents run her YouTube channel, where she has amassed prominence performing rock and metal covers of songs by bands like Tool, Metallica, and Slayer. Adam Jones, the guitarist for Tool, even complimented her rendition of “7empest.”
Recently, Maya Neelakantan, a 10-year-old guitarist from Chennai, won over hearts all over the world with her outstanding ‘America’s Got Talent‘ audition. Her distinctive mashup of Indian elements on classic rock songs has become an internet sensation.
She performed a stunning cover of Papa Roach’s “Last Resort,” expertly weaving Carnatic elements into the rock hit. Wearing a glittering bindi and a traditional Ghagra skirt, she looked stunning amid the other rock musicians at the audition.
After Maya’s 100-second performance, all four judges – Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel, and Sofia Vergara were incredibly thrilled and gave her a standing ovation. Renowned for his frank comments, Simon Cowell talked on how Maya went from being a shy 10-year-old to a “rock goddess” on stage while reflecting on his own experience learning to play the guitar.
Maya’s audition went viral, as Howie Mandel had anticipated, and Heidi Klum called her “gutsy and incredible.” On social media, the video of Maya’s astounding performance became viral very quickly.
