Akon recently provided an update on his ambitious “Akon City” project, acknowledging that it remains far from completion. Initially announced in 2018, Akon City aims to be a futuristic, eco-friendly hub in Senegal powered by cryptocurrency, drawing comparisons to Wakanda from Marvel’s Black Panther. During an interview with Chuck Creekmur, Akon admitted he may have announced the project too early due to excitement about its potential to transform African culture and economy. The city, envisioned as a technological and economic powerhouse, plans to feature luxury apartments, a cryptocurrency-based economy, and innovative energy solutions. However, Akon emphasized the challenges of creating such a large-scale development, describing it as “nowhere near done.”

Despite these hurdles, Akon remains steadfast in his vision. The project, located in Mbodiene, Senegal, covers 2,000 acres and comes with an estimated $6 billion price tag. Groundbreaking began in 2020, with the city intended to attract tourists, entrepreneurs, and investors while creating opportunities for Africans to thrive. Akon views the initiative as deeply personal, as Senegal is his ancestral home. He has consistently expressed a desire to bridge cultural gaps and promote innovation in Africa. The magnitude of the project reflects his commitment to leaving a lasting impact on his homeland and fostering progress across the continent.

In addition to his work on Akon City, the artist revealed plans for his sixth studio album, Not Guilty, scheduled for a 2025 release. While the city remains a work in progress, Akon is determined to bring his bold vision to life, demonstrating his dedication to both music and transformative entrepreneurship. As the project unfolds, its success will ultimately depend on sustained effort and collaboration.
