Starbucks’ new CEO, Brian Niccol, will make an extraordinary daily commute to his office. Living in California, Niccol will fly 1,600 kilometers each day to Starbucks’ headquarters in Seattle. According to his employment agreement, he will use a corporate jet for this daily trip. Despite the long distance, Niccol is expected to work from the Seattle office at least three days a week, following the company’s hybrid work policy.

At 50 years old, Niccol will earn an annual base salary of $1.6 million. On top of that, he can receive a cash bonus between $3.6 million and $7.2 million based on his performance. He also has the chance to earn up to $23 million annually in equity awards.

Niccol is familiar with this commuting arrangement. As CEO of Chipotle in 2018, he had a similar deal. At that time, Chipotle, originally headquartered in Colorado, relocated to California just three months after Niccol started in the role.

A Starbucks spokesperson said, “Brian’s primary office and a majority of his time will be spent in our Seattle Support Center or out visiting partners and customers in our stores, roasteries, roasting facilities and offices around the world. His schedule will exceed the hybrid work guidelines and workplace expectations we have for all partners.”

Such flexible work arrangements are frequently negotiated by high-level executives with considerable bargaining power.
