Olympic Legend, 77, Releases Hip-Hop Jazz Album
Bob Beamon, the long jump Olympic gold medallist, and Stix Bones had a conversation about their new music and their jazz album “Olimpik Soul.”
This is Bones’ third EP, which combines hip-hop beats with jazz and soul music.
The phrase “Brothers of Noble Excellence” is an abbreviation for the Bone Squad. Stix Bones on drums, Bob Beamon on percussion, Densen “Meighstro” Curwen on piano, synths, and strings, Albert Brisbane on bass, Steven Brown on guitar, Melvin Smith on saxophone, Sean Taylor (Sxntylr) on trumpet, Abiodun Oyewole on vocals and Khadejia Bass on vocals make up the band.
The EP, which is supported by The Bone Squad, features Bob Beamon, the 77-year-old Olympic long jump champion who made his recording debut as a percussionist in 1968 in Mexico City and jumped to the current Olympic record of 8.90 metres.
Stix described their music as a blend of jazz, funk, and hip-hop, with a core of soul music, particularly R&B, which differentiates their sound. Although primarily an instrumental group, their songs are rooted in soul music. Regarding working with Bob Beamon, Stix joked about Beamon’s high energy, saying, “Bob is still up in the air from the jumps, so I would tell him ‘Bob, come down to play some percussion’.”
Stix shared their future plans to tour globally, including Europe, aiming to bring their music to new audiences and continue releasing new music. Beamon is excited about the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, anticipating thrilling events in all sports. Stix highlighted breakdancing’s debut as an Olympic sport, noting its historical significance and appeal. He is also excited that their album “Olimpik Soul” is a contender for a Grammy in the jazz category, marking Beamon’s official recording debut, which has gained international radio play.
For the fans, they said, “We hope they buy our record, and come to our shows. Thank you for supporting us the way that you have been supporting us. This journey is long and it’s not over yet.”
“We hope they share our music with somebody else, and let them know about us. Be proud and spread the word. Play our songs at your events. Continue to support us,” they concluded.
“Olimpik Soul” is available on Apple Music, Spotify, and iHeartRadio.
